5 Old Remedies For Your Health
Love the old remedies! Grandma always had some nifty way to make something better. Check out these 5 things to make the boo boos feel better.
Do you remember when you’d get hurt at your Grandma’s or someone from the older generation with that great stories and they just had the perfect thing to fix your scrape? I had a grandma from the south and a Japanese grandma. Both had amazing stories. One from an internment camp during WWII and the other from growing up in the deep south of Arkansas as one of five. But one of the great things about that generation was the cures.
#1 Splinters
When you get a splinter whether as a kid or even as an adult, I bet you go for the needle and tweezers to dig it out so it doesn’t get infected…right? What if I were to tell you that you didn’t need to do that? That there was a way to get the splinter out without all that pain? No joke! Here’s what you do.
Take a potato, doesn’t matter what kind, and peel the skin like you were peeling potatoes to make mashed potatoes. Take that peel and put the fleshy side, the side you are more likely to eat, and place it over the splinter. I like to put a bandaid over the peel and splinter for the night. When you wake up the splinter should be out on the bandaid pad if not at the top of the skin for easy removal.
#2 Mosquito Bites
Unfortunately, I’m allergic to mosquito bites. The allergy is literally called “Skeeter Syndrome.” You can’t make this stuff up! When I was traveling one summer I came across an area where the mosquitos were everywhere and they ate me up. Like 21 bites give or take. It was crazy! I was at a restaurant itching away and this guy leans over and asks if I have any milk of magnesia at home. “No, why?”
Apparently, milk of magnesia when applied to the bite area like you would calamine lotion will take out the itch and reduces the inflammation in the bite. The guy said that he was Samoan and milk of magnesia always works for his kids when they get bit or stung by a bee in Hawaii. “That or mud.”
#3 Teething Babies
When I lived in Queens, New York, every morning I would stop by this little French bakery ran by this lovely Frenchman, Francois. Man did he make the absolute best orange brioche. Those orange crystals would burst in your mouth like caviar. And the brioche was so light, fluffy and buttery. But one day while I was waiting for my coffee and croissant, Francois came out to say hello to both myself and my then 6 month old little girl. She had started teething and was getting fussy which wasn’t like her at all.
Francois said that in France parents would give their teething babies ends of baguettes. The crunchy crusts and yeasts would both soothe and help cut the gums for the teeth to come through. Plus, had the added bonus of filling the babies tummy. When I had my son several years later, it was something I always kept around and rarely had an overly fussy baby again. Really seemed to work for this single mom!
#4 Nausea
Yeah, this is actually one of those old remedies. The use of ginger in various forms is making a huge come back in helping reduce if not eliminate nausea. Ginger tea, ginger chews, ginger flavored foods, etc. But one of the most recommended uses from doctors on when to use ginger has been heard when women are pregnant. Man, did it save me with my first child. I was so sick and then my doctor told me about the ginger chews from Trader Joe’s. Nearly completely eliminated my morning (more like all day) sickness.
#5 When You Are Already Sick
This old remedy is already widely known and much loved. When you have a fever or a cold what else would you have but chicken soup. Noodles, rice, just the broth, they all have their uses and preferred tastes per person. Chicken has amino acid cysteine which helps thin mucus and the broth helps with getting the proper amount of fluids and electrolytes. Making chicken soup not just comfort food but also extremely beneficial for your health. Now for me just make it Chicken Noodle Soup would you?
The old remedies have a lot of value that many may have forgotten with modern medicine being so at the ready. But before you just go to the pharmacy for whatever may ail you, look into the cures your grandma may remember. You never know. They may help you even faster than you might think without needing the potential foreign substances. Which may be even healthier in the long run.

Growing up I was always taking care of the horses. Then when it came time to work I would go back and forth from horses to coffee in Seattle to food in California, bringing my horse and dog with me. After going to school specifically for publishing I decided to combine agriculture with food service and have been working to get the name of the great food artisans out to the foodies who adore them. From serving Michelin starred chefs to judging coffee competitions and helping restaurants open for the best possible set up for success that is possible, I’m all about food from the ground up. Always happy to help so let me know if you have a suggestion or would like more information on a topic that I can cover. Thanks for reading!
