Corn ain't what it used to be. When we first discovered corn it was actually called maize by the Native Americans. It had way more nutritional value and was quite the decorative vegetable. And it has considerably more health benefits from the overall plant than just the little kernels that we primarily think of using today. Plus it's great when roasted in butter.

This is a seasonal vegetable primarily harvested in July and seen in white, yellow or bi colored varietals. Always so good roasted in butter over a grill or open flame.

🌀 Maize, Myth and Sacred Origins

Long before we started folding corn into casseroles or popping it in microwaves, maize was sacred. It was central to Mesoamerican life especially for the Mayans and Aztecs. They didn’t just eat it. They honored it. Celebrated it. Believed it was the foundation of humanity itself.

According to Mayan myth, humans were created from maize. Not metaphorically. Literally. Corn was life, spirit and body.

They used every part of it. Not just in food but in rituals and ceremonies. Corn husks were burned in purification. Cornmeal was used in offerings. Corn silk found its way into medicine. It wasn’t just survival. It was sacred practice.

🌟 Modern Apothecary Tip of the Week

Don’t toss the silk. Brew it.
Add a handful of fresh corn silk to boiling water, steep 10 minutes, strain and chill. It’s sweet, earthy and your kidneys will write you a thank you note.
