When Your Kid Gets Sick While Traveling: What to Do & Where to Get Help
No one plans for a sick kid mid-trip, but when it happens, you need a game plan. Here’s how to handle it—without letting it derail your adventure.
"Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." Can't argue with a Beatle. Especially when it comes to kids.
You're making plans to leave for the weekend, like I was, and then, like me, your kid gets sick. Mine came home with a fever from school. Don't think an airline is gonna like that, right? Travel insurance becomes a real lifesaver in this case.
But what if you get to your destination and THEN your kid gets sick?! Then what do you do?
Pre-Trip Planning: Expect the Unexpected
No one wants to think about their kid getting sick while traveling, but a little preparation can save you major stress. Here’s what to do before you leave:
✅ Pack a Travel Medical Kit
Digital thermometer
Fever reducers (children’s ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
Electrolyte packets (like Liquid IV or Pedialyte)
Anti-nausea meds
Bandages, antibiotic ointment
Probiotics for gut health
Hand sanitizer & disinfecting wipes
✅ Know Where to Get Medical Essentials in Your Destination
Asia: Watsons and Guardian pharmacies (found in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia) stock fever reducers, rehydration salts, and basic medications. In Japan, head to Matsumoto Kiyoshi.
South America: Farmacias Cruz Verde and Farmacias Ahumada are common in Chile, Colombia, and Argentina. Always ask for the active ingredient rather than the brand name, as medications may have different labels.
Europe & North America: Boots (UK), DM (Germany), and CVS/Walgreens (USA) are reliable.
✅ Find Local Medical Help Before You Need It
Google “pediatrician near me” in the local language or use apps like AirDoctor to book an English-speaking doctor.
Family-Friendly Hospitality: Going The Extra Mile
For hospitality professionals, understanding the needs of families traveling with sick children can make a huge impact. Consider offering:
In-Room Wellness Kits: Stock rooms with electrolyte packets, fever reducers, and herbal teas.
Concierge Medical Assistance: Partner with reputable local doctors or clinics for house calls.
Comfort-First Room Options: Provide extra pillows, humidifiers, and easily digestible room service meals.
Child-Friendly Healing Foods: A simple broth, rice, or herbal tea can make a world of difference for a sick traveler.
Hotel-Approved Babysitting Services: Some luxury hotels offer vetted babysitting services where trained staff can sit with a sleeping child while a parent takes a much-needed break. Always check with the concierge for availability.
